Flair:
"We had just crossed the Cape Fear River when the right engine dies. I was thinking, God, when are we going to activate the reserve tanks? Then I heard a boom, and it scared the shit out of me."
Crockett:
"When I got to the tarmac, I saw the pilot outside the plane, checking the fuel. I said: Make sure we have enough fuel in there. I was just joking. I'd never flown with him before......We were making our approach to New Hanover Airport, but the plane was too low; we almost hit a water tower. The pilot tried to pull up, but the engine stalled. There wasn't enough power. Had we been flying higher, we would have made it to the clear area of the runway. That's how close we were."
Flair:
".....The plane cut across several treetops, and a wing collapsed against a utility pole before we nose-dived, crashing into a railroad embankment. If we had gotten past the trees, we would have ended up on the runway."
