Bill Watts Hurt in Car Crackup
Bill Watts, former All-State football star at Putnam City high school, suffered serious injuries here Thursday when the car in which he was riding crashed into the side of a freight train.
The 19-year-old University of Oklahoma reserve guard was doing “as well as can be expected,” it was reported Thursday night at Mercy hospital.
Suffers Back Injuries
The accident occurred shortly before noon Thursday at the intersection of Meridian avenue and the Rock Island tracks in Oklahoma City. His mother, Mrs. Emma Lou Watts of 3950 NW 58, was driving.
Accident investigators said the car apparently rammed into the second diesel engine of the west-bound, 97 car freight train. Estimated speed of the train was from 45 to 50 miles per hour.
Watts was taken to Mercy hospital for emergency treatment. Officers said the former Putnam City high school footbal star suffered back injuries, lacerations, and possible internal injuries. His condition had been described as “serious” earlier.
All-City Line Star
Mrs. Watts apparantly was not seriously injured. The impact demolished Mrs. Watts’ 1954 sedan. Watts was graduated from Putnam City high school in 1957. He had earned All-City lineman-of-the-year honors there. He was also captain of the school’s wrestling team.
The injured player is married and lives at Sooner City on the OU campus. He is a sophomore engineering student.
