Verne Gagne als Wrestler ist sehr schwierig zu beschreiben.Er war keiner der sich um die Show kuemmerte,er begeisterte mit seiner Leistung.Er war einer der besten und letzten der sogennanten Fighting Champions.Er hatte ein unglaubliches Arsenal von Moves und counter Moves.Der begriff Ring psychology wurde erst durch ihn gepraegt.Er war 13 facher World Champion,davon 10 mal AWA World Champion,was keiner schaffte.Er hielt denn Title ueber 12 Jahre und 7 jahre am stueck von 1968 bis 1975.
Ein weitere Mythos ist das Vince Mc Mahon,Hulk Hogan heraus gebracht hat,diesen Mythos kann man getrost vergessen.
When he called me, I didn't know who he was," said Gagne. "He called from Tampa. ... I said, 'Look, who are you?' He said, 'I'm Hulk Hogan.' Greg happened to be in my office. I said to him, 'Greg, have you ever heard of a guy by the name Hulk Hogan?' And he said, 'Yeah, I saw him in New York one time.' I said, 'How was he?' He said, 'Ah, so-so.' He said, 'He's a big guy.' So I said 'Okay.' Then I'm back talking to Hogan. He said, 'I'd like to give it one more try. I've quit wrestling 'cause I can't make it. But I'd like to give it one more shot. I've been sitting here for the last three, four weeks or a month, and could I come into the AWA?' So we brought him up, and the rest is history." Am 18 July 1980 traf Verne Gagne auf Nick Bockwinkle.Vor 25000 AWA fans Commisky Park,Chicago gewann er das Match,es sollte sein letztes Match gewesen sein.Am 10 May 1981 trat Verne Gagne als Wrestler zurueck.35 Jahre lang stand er im Ring.Doch als Promoter war er weiterhin der AWA erhalten.

1985 expandierte dann die WWF rund um Vince Mc Mahon.Verne Gagne erkannte die zeichen der Zeit,und ging eine Kooperation mit Jim Crocket Jr ein unter dem Namen Pro Wrestling USA.Es gab weiterhin die NWA und die AWA,doch es gab sogennante Supercards,wo Superstars beider Promotions gegeneinander antraten. Und so kam es in den 80ern das es unglaubliche Cards gab.Doch immer mehr Stars wanderten von der AWA (und NWA) richtung WWF,Stars die Gagne trainierte.Und so kam es wie es kommen musste 1991 trat Verne Gagne als Promoter zurueck und die AWA schloss ihre Pforten ( dazu spaeter mehr).50 jahre lang war Gagne im Wrestling taetig.
Und so verlor das Wrestling an diesem Tag eine Legende.Man kann sagen Verne Gagne war die AWA.Gagne praegte nicht nur das Wrestling im Ring ganz entscheidend,sondern er trainierte auch einige der groessten und besten Techniker der Wrestling Geschichte.

Verne Gagne zog sich zwar vom Wrestling ganz zurueck vergleichbar mit Bruno Sammartino,die beiden haben sogar die selben Gruende und die selben Ansichten,doch der Name Gagne hoert man noch heute im Wrestling.Sein 17 Jahre alter Sohn Greg Gagne ist ebenfalls ein hervorragender Amateur Wrestler gewesen und koennte bald auch im Pro Wrestling fuer aufsehen sorgen.1999 wurde er dann in die Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame aufegnommen.Seine Frau Mary verstarb letztes Jahr im alter von 75 Jahren nach einer schweren Op am 9 May 2002 in Twin City ( Minneapolis,St Paul ) .Verne und Mary waren 56 Jahre verheiratet und hatten 3 Toechter und 1 Sohn.Seit dem Tod seiner Frau hat Verne Gagne koerperlich und phsychisch stark abgebaut.Oft kann er sich nur schlecht an was erinnern.Deshalb die besten genessungswuensche an Verne Gagne.

Man braucht wohl nicht extra erwaehnen das Gagne nichts vom heutigen Wrestling haelt,er nannte ganz spezifisch nur 1 Ausnahme,Kurt Angle.
"I don't know what the rules are in wrestling today. We had certain rules -- over the top rope was a disqualification, if you threw someone over the top rope, if you ran them into a ring post, you were out of there. Now they bring in tables, chairs, and slam them on there. And they let it go. There's nothing that makes it a sport of any sort. ... It's kind of pathetic. But it's getting ratings, and it's selling merchandise so what are you going to do?"
Ueber Vince Mc Mahon sagte er:""Oh, well, I don't know,Vince, we had him on the ropes there pretty good, but he got an influx of money from someplace and was able to survive and went on from there".
Eine ganz interessante Aussage von Gagne gab es auch ueber Steroide.
"I first heard of steroids, I think, in the '70s.When they first came out, the guys didn't know that they could hurt them. We had some guys die, overtake, take too much, or whatever. When that starting going, it seemed that the quality of the wrestlers changed."
"The good guys were the heroes in our era, and the bad guys were not. Now what you've got are the bad guys as the heroes. It has an affect on society, I don't care what anybody says," explained Gagne. "I know just from the things that they do in the ring -- the gestures, the interviews, the terminology, the words -- the kids pick up on it. And I don't think that it's a good influence."
"Most of the guys are on steroids today and they've got the big bodies, the muscular bodies that look good. But as far as watching the matches, the ones I see, are kind of a routine type thing.
You hit me, and I'll hit you. We're [not] going to hurt each other, we're just going look like we're hitting each other."
